A photostimulable storage phosphor comprises an oxysulphide of at least one alkali metal and at least one alkaline earth metal, said oxysulphide incorporating at least one dopant. Formation of the oxysulphide and incorporation of dopant or dopants may be carried out in a single step in a process which comprises: intimately mixing at least one alkali metal compound and at least one alkaline earth metal compound, least one dopant metal or compound thereof, and sulphur; heating the mixture for a period and to a temperature sufficient to bring about reaction thereof; and grinding the resulting product to a powder; at least one of said alkali metal compound and alkaline earth metal compound being an oxygen-containing compound so that said product is an oxysulphide. The compound in fine powder form may be deposited on a substrate which may be transparent and may store an image that can be recovered by irradiation with IR light and can be viewed in reflection or in transmission. |
