The method is used in an internal combustion engine (11) of a hybrid vehicle with at least one electrical machine (17) and a battery (20). It involves varying the transmitted power through the mechanical connection to this electrical machine immediately directed towards a set point and the battery gives out or takes in power during the change in operating state. The engine is guided during the change by certain selected operating points in the engine characteristic which are optimal with regard to at least one operating parameter like minimal fuel consumption, toxic emissions or noise generation, and permit a rapid change of engine speed without especial allowance for the variation of the generated power by the engine.
