Coded MPEG video data flow decoding method

The method involves dividing the decoding in storing and computing intensive tasks which need extensive storage and computation resources and in less storing and computing intensive tasks. The less storing and computing intensive tasks are executed using software modules which run on a processor (190) for generating preprocessed symbol flow data structures for each video picture. The preprocessed symbol flow data structures are stored in a buffer (192,194). The storing and computing intensive tasks are carried out using a special video hardware (118b) for generating a decoded video picture. The less storing and computing intensive tasks and the storing and computing intensive tasks are synchronised and the decoded video picture is displayed.
