The method involves determining the force on a pair of support arms (7,9), which is produced by a spool (19) acting on them. Strain gauges (24,25,61,62,66-69,76-79) are used to determine the forces. Electrical signals are passed from the strain gauges to a computer, which has also been supplied with the width and weight per unit length of the material web. The measured force can be used to generate a warning signal if a threshold value is reached.
