Apparatus for stretch forming metal strip includes two horizontally spaced dies to which the ends of the strip are clamped the dies being each simultaneously pivotable about two axes inclined relatively to one another whereby a stretch bending operation on the workpiece so clamped imparts curvature to the workpiece in more than one plane. A profiled metal band workpiece 200 is laid upon the outer ends of a pair of spaced dies 18, 20 when in the position shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the band 200 are then clamped to the dies 18, 20 by means 26, 28 which include jaws operated by hydraulic means 112 through toggles 120, an embossment 140 on the die and a recess 142 on the jaw cooperating to grip the end of the band firmly. A rod 52 is then moved forward by an hydraulic cylinder 44 so as, through links 65 and plates 94, to rock the dies 18, 20 about their pivots 68 until the ends of the dies come forward into closed alignment, Fig. 1, the band 200 thus being stretch formed on to the dies. The dies are moved apart against springs 90, during this pivoting by cams 30, 32, on die support plates 36, 34 attached to the plates 94, bearing on fixed followers 38, 40, the plates 34, 36 being carried by plates 22, 24 slidable along guides 16. The dies 18, 20 also pivot about horizontal pins 166 in the dies and on blocks 164 on the plates 36, 34. A vertical cam 168 on each plate 22, 24 engaging a follower 170 on each die 18, 20 so as to tilt the dies during the stretch forming operation. |
