摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the proper contrast state of light in a central part and a peripheral part by holding a compd. of liquid crystal and high polymer between two opposed substrates and forming electrodes in the inner surfaces of the substrates so as to apply a voltage upon the central part of an approximately round shape of a layer of the held compd. or the peripheral part surrounding the central part. SOLUTION: The two transparent substrates 10 provided with electrodes 12 in the peripheral part of the central part 11 having no electrodes are disposed to hold a seal material 13 and a transmission scattering type liquid crystal layer between the electrodes 12 opposed to each other. This liquid crystal layer comprises the compd. of liquid crystal and high polymer having positive dielectric anisotropy, and when a voltage is applied between the electrodes 12, the liquid crystal layer becomes the transmission state of an annular pattern of high transmissivity in the peripheral part and low transmissivity in the central part. As a result, apparent refractive indexes of liquid crystal of the peripheral part and the central part become conventional refractive indexes of liquid crystal to be equivalent to a refractive index of high polymer and to be unequivalent to the refractive index of high polymer respectively, and light scattering takes place. By this method, a spot diameter of laser beam can be converged, and the information recording density and the reproducing and recording characteristics are improved.
