PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the liquid crystal display device from having a defect due to the damage of a peripheral circuit built in a substrate of an IC built-in type active matrix liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has an element substrate 2 where pixel electrodes 8 and TFT elements 7 are formed, a counter substrate 3 which is joined to the element substrate 2 with a main seal material 11, liquid crystal charged between the element substrate 2 and counter substrate 3, and peripheral circuits 13a, 13b, 13c, and 14 which are formed at the periphery of the element substrate 2 and include transistors. In this case, the peripheral circuit 13a, etc., are shielded from the outside by arranging the counter substrate 3 opposite the peripheral circuits 13a, 13b, 13c, and 14, and consequently the peripheral circuits 13a, etc., are protected against an external shock, etc.
