PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To characterize a video data without requiring intermediate storing of the video data by converting the characterizing code to the video data code in order to make access to the video data with an external device and then arranging the video data to a video data file with this video data code. SOLUTION: A means 3 for generating a video data code of a video data storage device 1 translates the time code characterizing the data in the linear memory device 2 such as a magnetic tape to a video data code. The video data code is supplied via a data bus 5 to an external computer 6. Thereby, the video data for external computer 6 is characterized by the video data code which can be read by the external computer 6, which can make access to the data arranged by a linear memory means 2 via a data bus 5 and means 3.
