The method involves using sensors of an existing vehicle control system, each consisting of a measurement signal transducer in the form of an encoder ring rotating with a wheel, a toothed plate with signal generator elements uniformly distributed over its circumference and a fixed measurement signal pick-up. A disturbance point or marker (3) is introduced at the periphery of the measurement signal transducer to derive a filtered or electronically compensated signal for evaluating the wheel speeds (VR1). The distance covered and/or the current wheel position can be determined by counting the measurement signals starting from the marker point.
