Starting with a spring mattress provided with a rectangular frame 1 in which there are a plurality of transverse slats 2, the improvements consist in structuring each one of said slats 2 as a plurality of narrow modules or strips 3 which are independent from one another on account of intermediate grooves and associated via their ends in order to form the corresponding slat which is fastened to the frame 1 by means of supports 8 of any conventional type, with, in addition, the particular feature that, on some of these slats, at least one pair of stiffening elements are fitted, each one of these being embodied in a collar 5 which tightly surrounds all the modules of the slat and which has inner partitions which fit into the separation grooves between slats, so that these columns 5, from end positions in which they are inoperative, give rise to a progressive stiffening of the slat as they advance towards the mid zone thereof. Provision has also been made for the existence of components 7 for joining between collars 5 belonging to adjacent slats, allowing the forces to which they are subjected to be transmitted from slat to slat. <IMAGE>
