The extraction of complex divalent metal cations by naphthenic acid

Uranium metal values are extracted from aqueous solution or suspension, with a solution of naphthenic acid in an inert organic solvent immiscible with the aqueous medium. The extract is separated from the aqueous raffinate and stripped with an acid, e.g. sulphuric acid. The metal values are present in solution as complex divalent metal cations UO2++ or as a suspension of the hydrolysis products thereof.
