A process is described for the synthesis of 2-hydroxy-4-alkyloxy benzophenone by the selective alkylation of 2,4-dihydroxy benzophenone with a dialkyl carbonate, in liquid phase, in the presence of suitable catalysts, at a temperature ranging between 120 DEG and 220 DEG C. and at a total pressure ranging from 2 to 60 ate.
