The method involves placing an optical or electro-optical instrument into the container in such a way that at least a spatial section of the inside (31) can be observed using a signal receiver. The inside of the container may be observed using an endoscope (50). The optical signal entering the instrument is converted into an electrical signal. The observation signal may be recorded on a temporary or a permanent recording medium. Part of the spatial section of the inside of the container may be illuminated from outside the container. The instrument is inserted into the container using a protective tube (38).
