PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for a magnetic recording medium capable of being easily imparted with texture and reducing the attracting force between a magnetic recording medium and a magnetic head by specifying an cross angle formed by workscars of both surfaces of a substrate ground with ductility mode treatment by grindstone. SOLUTION: Fan shaped workscars are formed on both surface of the substrate ground with ductility mode treatment. The workcscars form a cross angle of 10-90 degrees with one surfaces and another surface of the substrate. Moreover, set cutting depths of whetstones at the time of the ductility mode treatment are preferably 0.05-20μm from the viewpoint of a device positioning accuracy and from the viewpoint of suppressing grinding loads and the generation of microcracks. Moreover, the cross angle is preferable to be not smaller than 10 degrees from the viewpoint of avoiding a head attraction or the positioning accuracy of the substrate at the time of grinding workings. Then, the cross angle which is said here is an angleθformed by tangents m, n of respective workscars at intersections of workscars to be formed on respective front and back surfaces of the substrate.
