PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clearly distinguish the function of an input-output device and to easily and also surely select an intended input-output device by performing function classification of input-output devices and recording a procedure which shows only input-output devices that correspond to a selected class and a procedure which designates a selected input-output device as an input-output destination. SOLUTION: In a personal computer 11 that is connected to a communication medium 1 of a local area network, a CPU 110 executes various programs such as an application program and an input-output device selecting program which are loaded on RAM 112 that operates as main memory and controls various processing and peripheral equipment. Here, the input-output device selecting program classifies inputoutput devices to plural classes according to functions and carries out a procedure which shows plural classes, a procedure which shows only an input-output device that corresponds to the class that is selected among the types of input-output devices and a procedure which designates an input-output device that is selected among inputoutput devices corresponding to the selected class as an input-output destination.
