The method involves defining control parameters for the control and-or regulation of the engine starting from a signal characterising a preferred shaft position. The signal characterising the preferred shaft position is corrected depending on operating parameters and/or for each individual cylinder. The correction is performed depending on at least the load and/or the revolution rate of the engine.
