A turbine plant, including a forward propulsion turbine 1 and a reverse propulsion turbine 3, the forward turbine normally rotating independently of the reverse turbine, has means to accelerate the reverse turbine in the same rotational direction as that of the forward turbine, a clutch arrangement la, 3a operable to establish a driving connection between the two turbines 1, 3, when their rotational speeds have been substantially synchronized and valve-controlled duct means operable to transfer working fluid from the forward turbine 1 to the reverse turbine 3 to change the rotational direction of the latter. A free piston gas generator 17 supplies working fluid through a proportioning valve 13 to either of the turbines 1, 3. A control console 18 controls the valve 13 through an oil line 20, the rate of fuel flow to the gas generator 17 through a line 22. an auxiliary valve 11 and a clutch-locking mechanism 21a through lines 23, 24, respectively. A control arm 19 on the console 18 is rotatable from a point C (full ahead) to a point F (full astern) as shown in Fig. 3. From the stop position A to the position B the gas producer 17 is idling and the proportioning valve 13 moves so as to increase the supply of working fluid to the turbine 1. The fuel supply is then progressively increased as the lever 19 travels to the point C. As the lever 19 is brought back at the position D the clutch lock mechanism is energized and the auxiliary valve diverts working fluid to the astern turbine 3 through an auxiliary nozzle 8 to rotate it in the ahead direction. As the turbine speeds synchronize, the clutch engages and is locked in engagement, whereupon the working fluid supply to the astern turbine is shut-off. Movement of the lever 19 to the position E moves the proportioning valve 13 so that working fluid is supplied to the astern turbine 3 through the nozzle 7. Beyond the point E, the working fluid supply to the astern turbine 3 is increased. Alternatively, the radial astern turbine 3 may be replaced by an axialflow turbine in which case the auxiliary inlet 8 is not fitted. A fluid coupling, which may be associated with a friction clutch, can replace the clutch 1a, 3a. The fluid coupling is charged while the control lever 19 is in the range B-F (Fig. 3), and drained while the lever travels clockwise from B to C. When the lever 19 travels anti-clockwise the coupling is charged at the position H and the reverse turbine is rotated. As the turbine speeds synchronize, the friction clutch is engaged.
