PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce methyl chloride with industrially advantage with suppression of by-product formation by carrying out the reaction between hydrogen chloride and methanol in the absence of catalyst where the liquid phase reaction in the fore stage is conducted under the hydrogen chloride excessive conditions, while the liquid phase reaction at the final stage is performed under the methanol excessive conditions. SOLUTION: In the production of methyl chloride by liquid phase reaction of hydrogen chloride with methanol in the absence of catalyst, the liquid phase reaction is divided into the two-step process. In the first step, hydrogen chloride and methanol are fed through pipes 11 and 12 into the first-step reactor 1-1, respectively. At this time, the methanol is fed stoichiometrically less than the hydrogen chloride to effect the liquid-phase reaction in the hydrogen chloride excessive atmosphere. Then, at gaseous mixture mainly comprising methyl chloride, the reaction product, is introduced via the pipe 22 and a liquid mixture mainly comprising water as a by-product and unreacting reactants is fed via the pipe 23 into the final reactor 1-2 and methanol is introduced via the pipe 21 so that the methanol becomes stoichiometrically excessive to the hydrogen chloride to effect the liquid phase reaction thereby producing the objective methyl chloride 32 in high efficiency.
|
