PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method enabling to purify a galactosyl- maltooligosaccharide derivative by a method except a gel filtration purification method, and to provide a method for producing the highly pure galactosyl- maltooligosaccharide derivative by the utilization of the method. SOLUTION: This method for producing a galactosyl-maltooligosaccharide or galactosyl-maltooligosaccharide derivative comprises treating a mixture containing (A) at least one kind of compound selected from the group consisting of the galactosyl-maltooligosaccharide and the galactosyl-maltooligosaccharide derivative and (B) at least one kind of compound selected from the group consisting of lactose, galactosyl-lactose, galactosyl-galactosyl-lactose and galactosyl-galactosyl-maltooligosaccaharide with an enzyme for preferentially hydrolyzing the compound B to convert the compound B into low molecules, and subsequently separating the compound A from the low molecules. The enzyme for preferentially hydrolyzing the compound B comprises at least one kind of enzyme selected from the group consisting ofβ-balactase andβ- galactosidase.
