Production of Semliki forest virus (SFV) capsid protein C comprises culturing Spodoptera cells infected with the vector AcNPV-C (Arch. Virol., 132, 307, 1993), extracting and disrupting the cell nuclei, and purifying the protein by cation-exchange chromatography. Also claimed are: (i) protein C obtained by the above process; (ii) a vector for expression of SFV protein C or Sindbis virus protein C, comprising a DNA sequence encoding the protein and a promoter for expression of this sequence in a eukaryotic cell; and (iii) a liposome containing the vector of (ii).
