A surfacing block (1) has upper and lower surfaces (2, 7) of a generally cruciform shape. Around the boundary of the surface of the block are projections (8) and/or recesses (9) for interlocking engagement with recesses and/or projections of a neighbouring block. The block has a groove (10) in its upper surface and a drainage slot in the groove (10) such that when the block is located in interlocking engagement with a neighbouring block, a drainage channel (12) extends from the upper surfaces of the blocks to the lower surfaces of the blocks. The risk of water accumulating on the upper surfaces of the blocks can therefore be reduced.
