Semiautomatic pistol and ammunition in which the pistol has a grip (16) adapted to be held in the hand of a shooter, a barrel (18) extending in a forward direction from the grip (16), a magazine (183) of cartridges positioned above the barrel (18), and an action located within the grip (16) for firing cartridges through the barrel (18). Cartridges are transferred from the magazine (183) down to the action, and spent cartridge cases are ejected down through the lower portion of the grip (16). The barrel (18) intersects the grip (16) below the top of the grip (16) at an angle such that the barrel (18) will be aligned axially with the forearm of the shooter when the grip (16) is held in the hand with the top of the shooter's wrist level with the top of the forearm.
