The divisible gearbox (1) of the work-piece headstock for a lathe or a milling machine comprises the housing (18,19) and a set of gear shafts (2,3,4,5), and has two separable parts including the casing, a first fixed part (18) of the work-piece headstock which incorporates at least the shaft (2) of the headstock spindle (8), and a second separable part (19) which incorporates at least the drive shaft (4) and which slides as a whole out of the machine along support-guide means (23, 24), and which has means (25, 26) to pivot the separable housing (19) to provide free access to the gear shafts (4,5). <IMAGE>
