A procedure for controlling a reluctance motor with at least one motor phase with a control device has the motor phase during each current cycle subject to a current flowing through it which is switched on cyclically by a power control element, especially a PWM one, at a switch-on control angle and switched off at a switch-off control angle. The current cycle of the motor phase is only started when the phase current from the previous cycle has decayed to a specified value or falls below this. An angle where the current in a cycle has fallen to zero is determined at least indirectly.
