For the separation of solids from a suspension, by flotation, the suspension is eddied in the clarifying zone (1) into a rotating and swirling movement (2). In the axial direction (4) of movement, the max. dia. (D1) of the swirling suspension at the inlet (13) is larger than the min. dia. (D2) at the outlet (14) and the transit between the dias. (D1,D2) has a contour (6) which is curved inwards. The curvature radius at the max. dia. (D1) is smaller than at the min. dia. (D2). Also claimed is an apparatus where the inner wall of the flotation vessel (12) has an inwards curvature (6) between the tangential inlet (13) and the outlet (14).
