PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display elements using antiferroelectric liquid crystals capable of displaying stable gradation. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 21 is sealed between substrates 11 and 12. The layer 21 shows an antiferroelectric phase in a bulk condition. In the state that an electric field is applied, the molecular array is aligned in a smectic layer and the phase which is not related to the molecular array, is formed between the layers. In accordance with the polarity and the magnitude of the applied voltage, the liquid crystal molecules in the phase are moved along a cone drawn by the liquid crystal molecules of a chiral smectic CA phase and directors are continuously changed in accordance with the applied voltage. Therefore, by arranging polarizing plates 23 and 24 putting them between the substrates 11 and 12, a gradation display is made possible. |
