During the method, thermal energy is supplied to the above-ground parts 12 of a plant by heating water to the boiling point and evaporating it and possibly overheating it, after which the saturated or overheated steam is conducted onto mentioned above-ground parts 12 of the plant. The apparatus thus comprises a steam producer such as a boiler 1 for heating and evaporation of water 4, an outlet 6 for the steam from the boiler 1, placed above the desired highest water level 5 in the boiler 1, a cover 8 open at the bottom and closed at the top for placing over an unwanted plant growth 12 and a line connection 7 between the steam outlet 6 from the boiler 1 and the inside of the cover 8. <IMAGE>
