The apparatus has a base plate (B) with two horizontal holders (P1, P2) on its top side for gripping the sheet of paper that extend parallel to each other for a distance equal to one third the length of the sheet of paper. The paper is folded by securing opposite sides of the sheet in one or two of the holders and then pressing down against the paper towards the base plate, and then, if necessary, securing the folded edge in one of the folders and pressing down towards the base plate, and optionally repeating this as required. Preferably the position of at least one of the holders is variable depending the size of the paper, and the base plate can be used as one of the two holders. An extra horizontal holder may be mounted beneath the base plate and/or at least one further holder can be mounted between the two main holders on the top side. The height position of the holders can be altered depending on how thick the stack of paper is.
