摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element using antiferroelectric liquid crystal capable of displaying stable gradation. SOLUTION: Between substrates 11, 12, a liquid crystal layer 21 is enclosed, which shown an antiferroelectric phase in a bulk state according to applied voaltages and which shows a mixing phase in which liquid crystal molecules having a tilt to main surfaces of the substrates 11, 12 and those of other phase are mixed in a state of being sandwiched between the substrates 11, 12 and being applied with a voltage across the substrates 11, 12. Since proportions of molecules of each phase forming the mixing phase and orientation state of the mesophase liquid crystal vary according to the impressed voltages, an optical axis of the liquid crystal layer 21 is continuously varied according to the impressed voltages. Therefore, gradation display becomes possible by arranging polarizing plates 23, 24 to sandwich the substrates 11, 12.</p>
