PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface discharge type alternating current plasma display panel which can reduce electrostatic capacity between a scanning electrode and a common electrode, by sorroundingly applying a dielectric layer to the scanning electrode and the common electrode. SOLUTION: In this panel an under substrate 30 is equipped with address electrodes 31 formed into strip shapes and arranged side by side thereon. An upper substrate 35 is equipped with a scanning electrode 361 formed so as to cross the address electrodes 31 and a common electrode 362 formed so as to be separated from, and placed by the side of, the scanning electrode 361 on a lower surface thereof. Here, a dielectric layer 37 is applied to the scanning electrode 361 and the common electrode 362 so as to surround these respectively and such that at least a part of the lower surface of the upper substrate 35 between the scanning electrode 361 and the common electrode 362 is exposed to a discharge space formed between the upper and the under substrate 30, 35. Power consumption of a panel is thereby lowered as a displacement current becomes less at the time of maintenance discharge. Further, because a pulse width of a maintenance voltage can be reduced relatively when delay time is shortened, frequency of the maintenance voltage and display brightness depending thereon can be increased. |
