The optical fibre (2) has one end (6) fitted with a flexible lens. This lens comprises several layers of optically transparent material (12,14,16,20). The first of these consists of an approximately hemispherical or similar shape, with successive skins formed around the outside of this layer. The transparent materials are chosen from a group containing the photolysis sol-gels, plasma treated sol-gels, pyrolysis sol-gels and hard adhesive optical materials. The successive layers present a pre-defined gradient of refractive index in order to achieve specific optical and geometrical properties. The refractive indices of the successive layers may either increase towards the end of the optical fibre, or increase in a direction away from the end of the optical fibre. |
