PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the liquid crystal display device in which the light beams emitted from a back light in a slanted direction are sufficiently utilized, the practical utilization efficiency of the beams is improved and the visual field angle characteristic is greatly enhanced. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a back light 10, light diffusing elements 9, a choloesteric liquid crystal layer 8, which passes one of the circularly polarized light beams among the clockwise and the counterclockwise polarized light beams and reflects the other circularly polarized light beams, a phase plate 7 which transforms the circularly polarized light beams into linearly polarized light beams, a liquid crystal panel 2 and linearly polarizing plates 1 and 6 which conduct polarizing display. The elements 9 emit the incident light beams while maintaining the incident angle if the angle is not more a diffusing starting angle θp1. If the incident angle is more than the angle θp1, the incident light beams are diffused and emitted. |
