Method and device for cleaning the bottoms of shoes and the wheels of shopping trolleys, wheelchairs, pushchairs and similar devices used frequently in the entrance areas to public buildings such as shopping areas or administrative and commercial buildings with assistance. A continuous cleaning mat (10) runs around between at least two deviating rollers (60, 70). In a section running in one direction, the mat acts at least partially as a tread surface and absorbs solid and liquid impurities, whilst in a section running back in the opposite direction, set at a distance from the first section, said impurities are removed from the mat by means of a cleaning and drying process (170, 180, 190, 310, 320, 330, 340, 450, 460). A belt band (90) serves to support and convey the mat (10), said belt band sliding in guide rails (120) or over a support plate (370).
