An actuator for use in an automatic transmission has a disc (1) that has latching positions that correspond to gear states e.g. parking (P) or reverse (R). The periphery of the disc has a series of shaped indents that correspond to the various gear positions and these are engaged by a roller (6) that is mounted on the end of a cantilever spring arm (5). A second roller (7) is mounted in a slot and this acts to ensure that main latching roller fully engages an indent.
