g -Cyanobutyraldehyde acetals are produced by reacting substantially equimolar amounts of acetonitrile and an alkali metal or an alkali metal amide and reacting the resultant intermediate with a substantially equimolar amount of chloropropionaldehyde acetal. The alkali metals are preferably sodium potassium or lithium. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent, e.g. liquid ammonia, an alkyl ether or an alicyclic ether. Numerous examples are given showing the preparation of acyclic and cyclic acetals. U.S.A. Specifications 2,409,086 and 2,437,600 are referred to. |
