A method for the preparation of articles used for transport and/or storage purposes, eg. pallets, pallet cages, (collapsible) pallet containers, cases, boxes, trays or compost buckets made from one or more thermoplastic materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, PVC, polyalkylene terephthalate, polystyrene or ABS and containing a laminate layer in at least one wall, base or cover section, comprises the following steps : (i) preparation of a pre-form (10) consisting of first and second bulk thermoplastic (A) layers and an expanded thermoplastic (B) intermediate layer (13) with an average density of 50-500 kg/m3, which together form a laminate from which the pre-form can be prepared by vacuum moulding, low pressure form pressing or low pressure blow moulding ; (ii) the pre-form is placed inside the mould of an injection-moulding tool which contains cavities for creating functional features such as reinforcing ribs, orientation or stacking components, hinge parts, pockets or holders for sticky labels, grip sections for a grab robot, locking devices or snap catches, and a pre-selected amount of molten thermoplastic (C) is injected via the tool's channel system in order to fill the mould with (C), which melts (A) ; (iii) the thermoplastic material in the mould is allowed to solidify and then the tool is opened to remove the rigid and/or thermally insulating article with well-defined functional features. |
