A machine for skin packaging articles having heat-sensitive top portions has a heat shield which may be moved to lie between clamping means holding a length of thermoplastic film at its edges and supporting means which carries the articles arranged on a porous substrate below the clamping means, heating means being provided above the clamping means. The film may be a laminate but preferably a surface treated polyolefin. The substrate may be porous or perforated paperboard. A length of film 18 (Fig. 2) is clamped in position, the end of the film extending over part of a release bar assembly 28 (Fig. 5), the heater 44 being withdrawn to a position over an insulator 52, to the side of a reflector 22, and the heat shield 58 (Fig. 2), operated by an air cylinder 60, withdrawn. The shield moves in one of the trackways 56 and has a reflective upper surface. The alternative trackways permit adjustment for different article height. The heater is moved into its operative position over the reflector 22 and the shield moved to be above the articles 96 and the substrate which are supported on a platform 4. Current is supplied to the heater and may cause the film to sag and rest on the shield 58. The shield is withdrawn and the platform 4 is raised so that the articles contact the film. Suction then draws the film into contact with the substrate. The heater may remain on for a short period following the withdrawal of the shield. The heater is withdrawn, the assembly is cooled, one end of the clamp is raised (Fig. 5) causing the assembly 28 to be released and a conveying and cutting assembly supplies fresh film. |
