Particles or groups of particles on a circular dish are detected photo-electrically and counted or otherwise recorded. The dish 5 is rotated by a motor and at the completion of every revolution a magnet steps a rack 23 to move the dish linearly with respect to the scanning means, whereby a succession of concentric circles of reducing diameter is scanned. When all the area has been covered a switch 29 opens to stop the operation.
