A sensor for measuring the concentration of a gas comprises: (i) a base; (ii) a resistor element (22), on the base, with a resistance that changes with the temperature of the element; (iii) a compound catalyst support structure (24), including a mixture of ceramic particles (34) and melted glass (32) that binds these particles together and adheres the support structure to the base and resistor; and (iv) and a catalyst for promoting the exothermic reaction of the gas, thus increasing the temperature of the resistor element. Also claimed is a method for manufacturing the sensor, involving: (a) supplying a base with a thermally sensitive resistor element upon it; (b) applying a mixture of ceramic particles and powdered glass to the base, as support structure; (c) heating the base at a temperature that will reflow the glass to bind the ceramic particles together and adhere the catalyst support structure to the base; (d) applying a catalyst in solution to the exposed surfaces of both the ceramic particles and reflowed glass of the support structure; and (e) reheating the base and support to reduce the catalyst in solution to a pure catalyst.
|
