Process for the preparation of 8-chloro-6,11-dihydro-11[1- [(5-methyl-3-pyridenyl)methyl]-4-piperidinylideno]-5H- benzo[5,6]cyclohepta[1,2-b]pyridine of formula I which comprises reacting the ketone of formula II with a metal compound of formula III where M represents a metal in an inert solvent to yield an alcohol of formula IV, which is dehydrated to yield a compound of formula I, and optionally compound I is transformed into a pharmaceutically acceptable salt. <IMAGE>
