The method for measuring the inner dia. of a hole in an object is carried out in a number of steps: a circular beam from a light source is formed. The inner wall of the hole of the object is illuminated with the circular beam. The reflected beam from the inner wall is received as a circular image, and the dia. of the circular image is measured, to provide the inner dia. of the hole. The system for carrying out the method has a light source, an optical illumination system for forming a light beam from the light source with a circular beam, and for the illumination of the inner wall of the hole of the object. An optical monitoring system is provided for the reception of the circular beam, which is reflected from the inner wall of the hole, as an observable circular image.
