In a process to deposit biodegradable refuse in a controlled open waste disposal facility, the novelty is that the heap of deposited refuse is covered by a gas-permeable hydrophobic membrane. This prevents the ingress of rainwater. The correct amount of water, required for the natural process of fermentation within the deposited refuse, is introduced by an irrigation system running through the refuse. The membrane is a permanently hydrophobic non-woven fleece or woven fabric. The irrigation system is linked to a water pump and a system of moisture sensors located at several points.
