An umbrella operating mechanism is provided having a pair of hubs (31,32), each of which is securable to an umbrella shaft (33). Each hub has a plurality of spokes (34,35) extending from slots (25) defined in the hub and the spokes are pivotable in a plane through the axis of the hubs.
