The regenerative thermosensitive transfer recording medium (1) comprises a dye layer (2), having a thermally diffusable dye at a given concentration, wherein the medium (1) is superposed on a material (10) to be transferred and heated in an imagewise pattern to transfer the dye of the medium (1) to the material (10) to be transferred thereby forming an image. The apparatus comprises a dye supplier (4) containing a thermally diffusable dye at a concentration higher than that of the dye layer, and a heater (7) for diffusing the dye from the supplier (4) toward the dye layer whereby the dye consumed during the transfer recording operations is supplemented from the supplier (4) to the dye layer.
