<p>The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1062299/C2/1> in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 8 alkyl group; their salts with mono- and di-carboxylic acids; and a process for their preparation comprising hydrogenating a 3,4-dihydroxybenzyl-methyl ketone oxime of the formula <FORM:1062299/C2/2> at room temperature and atmospheric pressure in a mixture of concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid and a C1- 8 aliphatic alcohol, using platinum oxide as the catalyst. Ketone oximes of Formula II are prepared by treating 3,4 - dihydroxybenzylmethyl ketone with a hydroxylamine of the formula NH2OR, or, to prepare the oxime in which R is hydrogen, condensing protocatechyaldehyde with nitroethane in the presence of ammonium acetate to form 3,4 - dihydroxy - 1 - (2 - nitro - 1 - propenyl)-benzene which is then hydrogenated to the oxime. Pharmaceutical compositions having hypertensive activity comprise a compound of the invention together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.</p> |
