PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a high performance cordierite ceramic from kaolinite as a main raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing the cordierite ceramic comprises molding a composition or its calcined powder suitably together with various necessary general additives and subsequently firing the molded product. The composition contains fine kaolin or clay containing kaolinite or halloysite as a main component, and fine magnesia compound particles having an average particle diameter of <=2 μm and capable of being thermally decomposed at a temperature of <=800 deg.C to form MgO, in an Al2 O3 : MgO chemical composition molar ratio of 1:(0.8-1.2), and further contains a borate compound such as borate or borosilicate glass in a B2 O3 content of 0.1-3.5 wt.%. |
