PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a SiC-based composite material having a high strength and a toughness value and exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance in a wide temperature range, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This SiC-based composite material of fiber-bound type ceramic comprises inorganic fibers containing (a) an amorphous substance substantially comprising Si, M, C and O, (b) the aggregate of crystalline ultrafine particles substantially comprising β-SiC, MC and C with an amorphous substance substantially comprising SiO2 and MO2 wherein M is Ti or Zr or (c) the mixture of the component (a) with the component (b), and an inorganic substance containing (d) an amorphous substance comprising Si, O and M, (e) a crystal aggregate comprising crystalline SiO2 and MO2 or (f) the mixture of the component (d) with the component (e), and containing crystalline particles comprising MC having a particle diameter of <=100 nm and dispersed in the inorganic substance. A 1-200 nm thick layer comprising amorphous and/or crystalline carbon is placed as an boundary layer between the inorganic fibers and the inorganic substance. A protecting layer consisting mainly of Si, O and B, having a thickness of 10-200 μm and having an inwardly inclined composition is further formed on the composite material. |
