PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing acetic acid comprising the 1st catalytic stage to convert hydrogen and carbon monoxide in synthesis gas to obtain a liquid process flow containing methanol and the 2nd catalytic stage to carbonylate the process flow with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a metal compound selected from the group VIII metals of the periodic table and a halogenated compound as an accelerator to get a product flow rich in acetic acid. SOLUTION: This process for the production of acetic acid contains (i) a step to extract an outlet gas flow containing carbon monoxide and residual amounts of acetic acid and halogenated compound from a carbonylation stage, (ii) a step to separate the outlet gas flow into a liquid fraction containing a part of the residual acetic acid and a part of the halogenated compound and a gaseous fraction containing the remaining parts of acetic acid and the halogenated compound, (iii) a step to circulate the liquid fraction to the carbonylation stage, (iv) a step to absorb the gaseous fraction in a liquid to remove acetic acid and the halogenated compound from the gaseous fraction and obtain a circulation flow rich in carbon monoxide and (v) a step to introduce the CO-rich circulation flow to a synthesis gas conversion stage. |
