Compounds of formula I are prepared by ozonolysis and reduction in the presence of alcohols of a compound of formula II. This compound II can be obtained from a compound of formula III' which, in its turn, can be obtained from a tropolone of formula V'. The meaning of the various symbols is given in Claim 1. The compounds of formula I are useful as synthetic intermediates in the preparation of prostaglandins.
