An accumulator electrode comprises a flexible carrier for the active material made from a non-conducting synthetic resin felt or fabric and, as current collector, a thin flexible metal layer pressed against the carrier surface. The carrier may be made from nylon fibres or a mixture of nylon and metal fibres and may have 10 to 20 times its weight of active material precipitated on to it. In a particular embodiment the electrodes of a nickel-cadmium cell may be produced by dipping a nylon felt into a hot solution of nickel nitrate containing little cobalt nitrate or a cadmium nitrate solution. The felt is then dried, soaked in aqueous NaOH or KOH to precipitate the metal hydroxide, washed and dried. The sequence may be repeated several times but the number of sequences required may be reduced by compressing the carrier. The current collector may be a perforated sheet, e.g. nickel plated steel less than 0À1 mm. thick, a wire gauze or expanded metal sheet. Its surface may be roughened. The current collecter may be wrapped round the carrier or vice versa. A continuous strip of electrode material may be manufactured and cut to desired shape and size. The electrodes separated by porous separators may be folded or wound to occupy a major part of the internal volume of a cell. The container may be of a flexible material, e.g. polyethylene and may be sealed or vented. The electrolyte may be 7NKOH. |
